A massive water pump is being used to reduce water levels in Loe Pool near Helston. The pool is the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall, but it has not been able to cope with the amount of rain that has fallen in recent weeks. The Environment Agency (EA) said the high water level could cause the River Cober to flood. More than five tonnes of water was being pumped out of the lake and into the sea every second. The pump was lent to Cornwall by the EA in Wessex after the wettest November since 1914. It more than doubled the amount of water being removed from the lake by the permanent flood prevention equipment at Loe Pool. The excess water was being pumped into the sea at Loe Bar, near Porthleven. Nick Ely from the EA said: "We have a normal discharge that comes out of the lake of a couple of tonnes a second through our Environment Agency assets. "We've been boosting those recently with some of the largest pumping equipment in the country, we're now kicking out five tonnes a second, that's in the region of 500,000 tonnes of water every day." If Loe Pool causes the River Cober to flood at least 45 properties around St John's Road and Helston Boating Lake would be at risk of flooding. Mr Ely warned even with the pump there was still a risk to homes. He said: "We're not out of the woods by any means. We are drawing the lake level down but only in the region of two inches or 50mm a day so there is still a risk of flooding if we get further rainfall." The EA expects the pump to be in place until after Christmas.
