RCMP in Quebec are warning the public about a new kind of fraud ring, which targets people with RRSPs who are desperate for money. Thousands of victims may have been Gate Valves swindled out of millions of dollars, the RCMP said, adding many people may still not be aware they were scammed. The RCMP said they are dismantling a fraud ring that attracted its alleged victims through word of mouth and by placing classified ads in newspapers. The victims were promised a much better return on their investments, police said. The ring then allegedly used the savings to buy up penny stock — driving up the prices in what is known as a “pump and dump” scheme, Insp. Dominique Landry said. Police said the culprits then sold their shares at a high prices and the seniors were stuck with huge losses when the shares subsequently tumbled. So far, no arrests have been made, but police said they are questioning 16 suspects.
